Cincinnati Defeats Chicago, 4-3
|
The Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs, 4-3. Cincinnati pitcher and Le Grand, California, native Jack Coombs led the way. The winning pitcher was Coombs, now 4-2. He tossed 9 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 6. The loss puts Chicago at 11-12.
With runs few and far between, the Reds had to seize their opportunities when they came. One of the most important chances for Cincinnati came in the top of the sixth inning, when right fielder Solly Hofman delivered a run-scoring single. The single was hit off Rube Bressler and made the score 4-3, Reds. Hofman went 2 for 4 with 2 singles and a walk.
"We had the game right there for the taking," said Chicago manager Mike McCarver. "But we decided not to take it."
