Mayer Toys with Boston in 2-0 Win
|
It wasn't easy but the St. Louis Browns made it look that way.
Starter Erskine Mayer shut out the Boston Red Sox despite having what he later called "sub-par" stuff, and the St. Louis Browns cruised to victory, 2-0. Mayer allowed only 4 hits and rang up 3 strikeouts but insisted later that he did not deserve primary credit for the win.
"It didn't feel quite right today, but I got a lot of help to get through," he said. "I trusted my catcher and the guys behind me bailed me out more than once when I screwed up."
This season Mayer has worked 54.2 innings with 18 strikeouts en route to a 2-4 record and a 4.77 ERA.
