Cardinals Make Cubs 4-2 Losers
|
West Side Park was the site of the home opener for the Chicago Cubs. The contest featured a prime matchup between Rube Benton of the visiting St. Louis Cardinals and Charlie Schmutz of the Cubs. The final score was 4-2, the Cardinals getting the win. Rube Benton turned in the best performance.
St. Louis second baseman Jim Viox contributed a timely at-bat in the top of the fourth. With two down, he hit a curveball into left field for a run-scoring single. It was his 2nd hit of the season and put the Cardinals ahead, 3-2.
"Rube -- his tempo and rhythm were good," said Cardinals manager John Hartgraves. "He was the key to us winning."
