Wood Spins Masterpiece, No-Hits Cincinnati
In a dominant outing, Smoky Joe Wood of the Chicago Cubs totally silenced the bats of the Cincinnati Reds, finishing with a no-hitter.

In the Cubs' 4-0 victory, Wood faced only 29 batters, surrendered no hits, had 7 strikeouts and 2 walks.

"Honestly, I didn't even know the situation was what it was until the seventh inning," Chicago manager Mike McCarver said. "I happened to look up there to see how many hits we had gotten, and I happened to notice that they hadn't gotten any."

Commenting on the defeat, losing manager John Mullen told reporters in the clubhouse that he had a "pretty simple" analysis of the game.

"The Cubs had all the hits and all the runs, so they won," he snapped. "But yeah, Wood pitched a heck of a ballgame."

So far this season Wood has a 9-10 record with a 2.46 ERA.
