Wheat, Senators Too Much for Athletics
|
The home crowd had a good time watching the Philadelphia Athletics and Washington Senators get after it.
The Washington Senators bested the Philadelphia Athletics by a score of 8-5, with left fielder Zack Wheat getting the main credit. On the day, Wheat was 4 for 5 with 2 triples and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3 for the Senators. Nap Rucker, the winning pitcher, improved to 20-15. He pitched 7 innings, giving up 11 hits and 5 runs, while striking out 3 and walking 3. Ben Tincup earned his 12th save in 14 tries.
Washington grabbed the momentum in the bottom of the fifth, when Wheat, who led the AL in extra base hits with 62 last year, hit a run-scoring triple. His 7th triple of the season put the Senators out in front, 4-3.
"Nice to see our side come away with the win," Wheat said after the game.
With the win, Washington pushed its record to 84-68.
