Tigers Defeat Browns, 6-4
|
The St. Louis Browns got a superb performance from pitcher Dutch Leonard, but the Detroit Tigers still won the game, 6-4. Leonard threw 8 innings of 6-hit ball. Detroit reliever Hank Gehring picked up the win, raising his record to 5-1. Bob Shawkey was tagged with the loss. The triumph puts Detroit at 30-13 for the season.
The game was at a stalemate until left fielder Bob Bescher came to bat in the top of the tenth. Facing St. Louis pitcher Bob Shawkey, he hit a full count fastball for a 2-run single. It was a game-changer, putting Detroit on top, 6-4.
"No one wins," Bescher said, "without the will to win."
