Phillies Throttled by Reds, 8-1
|
The home crowd had a good time watching the Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds get after it.
Cincinnati got a strong outing from Jack Coombs as the Reds defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-1, at Redland Field. Coombs, now 5-5, was the winner. In 9 innings, he gave up 5 hits, while striking out 5, walking 4, and allowing 1 run.
Cincinnati shortstop Roger Peckinpaugh contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the fifth. With two down, he hit a fastball into left field for a 2-run single. It was his 60th hit of the season and put the Reds ahead, 3-1.
"We played a good game and came out on top," said Coombs.
The Reds, at 27-36, sit in 7th place in the NL.
