Boston Red Sox starter Jim Buchanan turned in an exceptional performance against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park , resulting in a Boston win, 3-2. The 5th-place Red Sox improved to 34-35.

In the bottom of the ninth, with two out and the game tied, 2-2, pinch hitter Mike Konnick won it for Boston. With a runner on 1st, Konnick hit a first pitch curveball from Ralph Glaze for a run-scoring double, giving his team the 3-2 win.

"On the outside I was calm," said Red Sox manager Jimmy Collins. "But inside I was a nervous wreck."
