Pirates Show Nerve in Tight 3-2 Win
|
The Pittsburgh Pirates took New York pitcher Al Hiester's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Forbes Field. The final score had Pittsburgh getting past the Giants, 3-2. Hiester went 9.1 innings and allowed 2 runs, striking out 5. Pittsburgh reliever Joe Willis picked up the win, upping his record to 2-4. Tim McCabe absorbed the loss. Pittsburgh now has a 3-game win streak.
Coming to the plate with two out in the bottom of the 12th inning, Pittsburgh left fielder O. Swain had a chance to be the hero. Facing New York pitcher Tim McCabe with a runner on 2nd, Swain, who finished 4th in the NL in doubles with 31 last year, hit a walk-off run-scoring single.
"Coulda, shoulda, woulda," said New York manager Dennis Pickering. "We had our chances and didn't cash in."
