Yankees Come Back Late to Clip Tigers
|
The New York Yankees got a magnificent effort from pitcher Ed Summers, who kept Detroit hitters in check en route to a 2-1 Yankees win at Brush Stadium (AL). Summers went the distance for New York. He gave up 1 run on 5 hits. The win gives New York a season record of 27-22.
In the bottom of the ninth, with no one out and the game tied, 1-1, catcher William Fischer won it for New York. With the bases empty, Fischer hit a 1-0 fastball from Bill Steen for a solo home run, giving his team the 2-1 win.
"I'll be honest," said Summers. "I didn't have much left in the tank."
