The Detroit Tigers defeated the Washington Senators, 5-1, in AL action at National Park. Detroit pitcher Walter Johnson had a standout performance. Detroit leads the AL by 2½ games.
In the top of the fifth, third baseman Red J Smith hit a 2-run single to right. The single, which was hit off of Ben Tincup, gave Detroit a 3-0 lead.
"I'm just happy to help the team win," Smith told the Detroit Herald.
