The Detroit Tigers withstood an impressive performance by Washington first baseman Fred Merkle to defeat the Senators, 7-6, at Navin Field. Merkle went 4 for 5 with a double and 3 singles. Joe Engel earned the win to go to 10-8. He allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, with 4 walks and 2 strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Earning the save was Bill Steen.
