Big Day by Heilmann Ignites Phillies Win
|
The Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies delighted fans at Baker Bowl.
With center fielder Harry Heilmann leading the charge, the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Chicago Cubs, 9-4, at Baker Bowl. Heilmann, who finished 4th in the NL in home runs with 7 in 1913, went 4 for 5 with a double and 3 singles. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. Christy Mathewson got the win, improving to 15-13. He pitched 6 innings, giving up 8 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 5 and walking 3.
The Phillies extended their lead in the bottom of the third. With no outs and the bases loaded, Elmer Flick hit a 2-run single to make it 3-2, Philadelphia.
"I felt good up there," said Flick. "I saw the ball well."
The win elevated the Phillies to 58-57.
